Ups, Downs and Milestones Oh My!

The past couple weeks have been full of ups and downs for baby Max and me. We’re in the midst of a move from Alabama to Germany. Yes, Germany. It’s emotional and stressful and overwhelming and exciting all at the same time. But, the bottom line is it’s A LOT of everything.

In the midst of packing and sorting and organizing our home, Max started rolling over from his back to his belly. When he did it the first time I thought it was some sort of fluke. I know it's been a few years since I had an infant, but 3 months seems quite early to be rolling over! I was not mentally prepared for any level of mobility at this point. His new trick is all the more impressive because of his adorable chubbiness.

Despite flourishing physically, Max has had a really rough couple of days. He has some sort of stomach bug or is reacting to something I’m eating. He has had what I can only assume is the baby version of diarrhea – countless dirty diapers a day – which have resulted in a diaper rash. Even more upsetting, he has been far more fussy than normal. There have been times he’s downright inconsolable. After a couple days, I realized that the crying spells occurred shortly after breastfeeding. I was crushed. I know that nursing Max is the best thing I can do for him, but my milk was causing him pain. Needless to say, he and I both spent some time in tears one night.

Of course we’re in transit without easy access to our normal breastfeeding resources, so I have to go with my gut and my instincts to make the best choices for him. (I also need to give my husband lots of credit here. He’s been really supportive.) I’m really hoping his belly issues are a temporary reaction to our current stressful circumstances. But, I am committed to breastfeeding Max so if I need to change my diet to accommodate his little body I will. Only time will tell.
