Making Holiday Moments Worth Remembering

A friend of mine has the quote “We don’t remember days, we remember moments.” on a magnet on her refrigerator. The quote by Cesare Pavese pretty much sums up my approach to the holidays with our kids. Between a mix of tradition from my childhood and creating new memories, I hope we’re helping our kids to experience some really special and memorable moments.

As much as I love celebrating Christmas, it always seems to sneak up on me. Every year. As if it isn’t always celebrated on the same day. Nevertheless, there is one tradition that I am committed to doing year after year because we did it when I was a kid. Every Christmas Eve, the entire family is allowed to open one present and every year that present just happens to be new pajamas. I remember that, as a kid, it took me a couple years to catch on that – surprise, the gift was pajamas! – but that didn’t make it any less exciting. It marked the true beginning of our family celebration.

My kids are clearly a little brighter than I was because they already know to expect pajamas on December 24. The moments after, though, when we all hang out together, in our pjs, are what I hope my kids will remember. Being together, being silly and enjoying one another.

This year it’s even more important to me that we make special memories as it’s the first time we’ll be celebrating Christmas with only our immediate little family. Even though we can’t be with family we’re making the most of being in Germany by embracing the local Christmas traditions and enjoying local markets and festivals.

And, of course, this is also our first Christmas as a family of five, with Max, as a complete family. I can think of no better way to create special moments this holiday season.
